About this item
- Feature. The Aji Dulce Cachucha plant is a shrub that grows as perennial in warm climates. In cooler climates it grows as an annual. The plant can reach a height of about 5-6 feet if it is allowed to grow as a perennial.
- Taste. The fruits are highly aromatic and the flavor is unusual and complex, with overtones of black pepper and coriander, and undertones of other spicy flavors.
- Sow. Plant Aji dulce pepper seeds 1/2 inch deep, with one seed per 12-inch pot. Water the soil with 2 inches of water. Using a watering avoids displacing the pepper seeds in the soil. Keep the mix moist but not wet at 80°F and 90°F. Seedlings emerge within 7-25 days.
- Growing Conditions. The plant is very vigorous. It does well grown in full sun. If the plant is grown in the shade it will still produce, but the plant will grow very thin and tall.
- Care. Once established, the plant has low water requirements. All pepper plants do well grown in warm temperatures. The cachucha can tolerate cooler temperatures but are very sensitive to frost.
- Easy to grow. Aji Dulce is easy to grow and low-maintenance. With a little bit of patience, you can enjoy this fresh delicious sweet pepper frequently.
- Harvesting. Harvest the peppers at their maturity date. Cut young green peppers for milder flavor or leave the peppers on the plant to ripen to red and orange for stronger taste.
- Use. The sweet peppers are the essential ingredients in preparing sofrito, which is added to stewed rice, beans, fish, meats and soups. You can add whole bell peppers (or halves) to soups and stews for tastier dishes.
